Dear Meals on Wheels of Wheaton Volunteer,
I am writing to share an important update about the future of Meals on Wheels of Wheaton and to thank you for your continued dedication to our mission.
After careful consideration and planning, the Meals on Wheels of Wheaton Board has voted to have a service hand off with Meals on Wheels of Takoma Park-Silver Spring, effective August 1. We have been very impressed with the group leading Takoma Park-Silver Spring and we are confident they will continue serving our clients with the same care, compassion, and commitment that have always defined our organization.
As our volunteer, you are critical to the mission of Meals on Wheels. Our clients depend on the nutritious meals, friendly visits, and personal connections that you provide. Takoma Park-Silver Spring will continue operating from the Temple location where you currently volunteer, and we will continue to rely on your support to deliver meals to those who need them most.
As we move through this transition, we will share additional information and updates. In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly.
Thank you again for your commitment to Meals on Wheels of Wheaton and to the clients we serve every day. Together, we will continue this important work and ensure that no one in our community goes without the nourishment and support they deserve.

The following letter from Takoma Park-Silver Spring Executive Director Javonte McDonald provides additional information on transition plans.
Dear Volunteer,
Thank you for taking the time to read Terri’s letter and this one. My team and I look forward to welcoming you to Meals on Wheels of Takoma Park/Silver Spring and working with you to serve homebound neighbors in the Wheaton community. Together, we can sustain and strengthen the support that Wheaton’s clients, their families, and volunteers receive, and we ask for your help to make it happen.
What to Expect
- Starting July 6: Our team will contact you to discuss our volunteer onboarding process and answer your questions.
- Throughout July: We will contact Wheaton’s clients about enrollment in our program. We will offer two fresh, healthy meals per day, five days a week, at the same cost they pay today for Wheaton’s services.
- July 21 & July 23: We will host group training sessions for volunteers on Tuesday, July 21, and Thursday, July 23. We’ll schedule additional sessions as needed.
- July 24–26: We will host an in-person gathering for volunteers from both organizations the weekend of July 24-26.
About Meals on Wheels of Takoma Park/Silver Spring
- We celebrated our 55th year of service in June.
- We serve fresh meals made from scratch each day in our Takoma Park kitchen.
- We deliver about 55,000 meals a year with help from more than 250 volunteers.
