Local Nonprofit Invites Community to ‘Come as You Are’ for its $15 Per Plate Fundraiser

TAKOMA PARK, MD–Brought back by popular demand coupled with a calling to support those who have suffered from job loss under the new administration, Meals on Wheels Takoma Park/Silver Spring is hosting its second annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser Wednesday, May 7, from 5:30-8pm. The come-as-you-are, drop-in-when-you-want spaghetti dinner will be held at its kitchen location at 7410 New Hampshire Ave., Takoma Park, MD. “Each year I find myself saying that our meal delivery to homebound neighbors is needed ‘now more than ever’, and here we are today, with federal funding, which provides over a third of our support, not yet reauthorized and under threat,” said Ruth Masterson, Executive Director of Meals on Wheels Takoma Park/Silver Spring. “But we believe in the power of community connections. That’s why we’re inviting our community to come together, to connect over dinner, asking those who can for support, and also setting aside some free tickets for Federal workers who have lost their jobs since January 20.”
“Truly everyone in our community is invited. Families are invited to stop by for an easy dinner out, low-cost and kid-friendly. Volunteers are invited to come socialize. Anyone interested in learning more about Meals on Wheels Takoma Park/Silver Spring is welcome to come see our operations. The buffet meal will accommodate everyone from plant-based through omnivores, from low-carb to no dairy.”
Drop in between 5:00pm and 8:30pm to enjoy spaghetti, garlic bread, salad, and dessert prepared in the Meals on Wheels kitchen. Attendees will also be able to tour the office and kitchen space where the magic of Meals on Wheels Takoma Park/Silver Spring happens. The cost is $15 per person, with tickets expected to sell out. Additional beverages will also be available, including a cash bar with wine and beer.
“We’re bringing this event back to the community as a signature event. As we are in need of support to continue providing our service, it’s important to us to open the doors to demonstrate our support of our entire community,” said Courtney Gardner, Community Engagement Manager.
Last year’s sold-out event includes a silent auction for donated items ranging from a handcrafted scarf to Scotty’s Vodka; and gift certificates from local businesses such as AFI Silver Theater and Grace Yoga Studio. The organization is still accepting auction items and sponsors, with all proceeds directly benefiting meal delivery to hungry homebound neighbors.
Founded in 1971, this local program serves residents in Takoma, Silver Spring, Langley Park, Chillum and Adelphi. People in these communities rely on Meals on Wheels’ essential service to remain healthy and independent at home, now even more so after a lingering pandemic and high inflation. In addition to preparing and delivering nutritious hot and deli meals to homebound residents, Meals on Wheels Takoma Park/Silver Spring saves families thousands of dollars by allowing loved ones to remain in the comfort of their own home and still receive sustenance. One year of Meals on Wheels TPSS service costs less than just one overnight in a hospital or 10 days in an assisted living institution.
Diners at the May 7, 2025 dinner are welcome any time between 5:00pm and 8:30pm, with dinner served 5:30pm-8:00pm and the silent auction closing at 8:15pm. Come to 7410 New Hampshire Ave. in Takoma Park. Two front doors, one wheelchair-accessible, are in the southern wing of the building. Cost is $15 per person and all ages are welcome.
